Alumni Speakers

As part of our Year of Celebration, there will be opportunity to get involved in discussions around expanding global experience for our students, future employability of our graduates, commercialisation of research and marketing & branding of UWS. Professor Craig Mahoney, Principal and Vice-Chancellor, will deliver a talk entitled “UWS Past, Present and Future” on Thursday 12 October.

On Friday 13 October alumni and students can hear what has helped our successful alumni succeed in their careers and what employers are looking for from graduates. Alumni will have an opportunity to meet individually and in groups with the speakers, in a relaxed networking environment with tea, coffee and cake.

Craig Mahoney

UWS Principal and Vice-Chancellor

Professor Craig Mahoney joined UWS as Principal and Vice-Chancellor on 1st of August 2013. He was formerly Chief Executive of the Higher Education Academy, a post he was appointed to in 2010. Professor Mahoney has had a distinguished career in academia and sport. He has published widely in the areas of children’s fitness, health, sport, exercise, performance and education. 

Anne Robb

Founder, The Marketing Mentor Scotland

A graduate of Business Economics and Marketing, Anne uses her 20 years’ experience in marketing and entrepreneurship to help businesses grow and flourish. Anne has worked on marketing strategy for large companies such as RBS, Scottish Widows, Tesco Bank, Diageo and Tennents and has founded two businesses (a specialist marketing recruitment firm and a health and beauty ecommerce company). 

Alexander Stoddart

Sculptor

Honorary graduate Alexander Stoddart, best known for his civic monuments and classical sculptures, has been Sculptor in Ordinary to the Queen in Scotland since 2008. Sandy's studio is situated in University of the West of Scotland's Paisley Campus and contains approximately 200-300 pieces. Stoddart's civic monuments include bronze statues of David Hume and Adam Smith, and the statue of John Witherspoon situated at Paisley Campus. 

Iain Anderson

Partner at PwC, London

Iain works with global businesses advising them on the effectiveness of their IT capabilities and major transformation programmes. Iain graduated in 1994 with BA Honours degree in Business Economics with Finance and has extensive experience, having held positions previously as Global IT Director at Volex and Director at Ernst & Young. 

Dr Mansoor Al-Jamri

Editor-in-Chief Al-Wasat Newspaper, Bahrain

Dr Al-Jamri is a journalist and the founder of Al-Wasat Newspaper in Bahrain. He is the recipient of the CPJ International Press Freedom Award 2011 (USA), and the "Peace through Media Award 2012 (UK)" and author of several books. Dr Al-Jamri has a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University.

Michael Spiteri

Chief Digital Officer Santander, London

A Mechanical Engineering graduate from 1984, Michael solves a wide range of business issues by applying innovative and disruptive technology & techniques and helps clients understand the impact and opportunities associated with becoming a Digital Business.

Laura Casci

Delivery Manager Certeco, Glasgow

Laura graduated in 1995 with PGDip Information Technology and has a proven track record in Test and Quality Assurance Management. Laura has successfully delivered testing for a number of large, complex transformation programmes, managing test budgets in excess of £5 million and teams in excess of 50 resources.

Paul Douglas

Director & General Manager at Terex Equipment Ltd, Motherwell

Paul began his career working as a Design Engineer with Terex Equipment Ltd, after studying Mechanical Engineering at Bell College (now UWS Hamilton Campus) and obtaining a masters degree from Northumbria University. Paul then went on to become Group Engineering Director at Alexander Dennis Ltd., before returning to Terex Trucks, as General Manager.

Maqbool Rasul

The Rasul Group, Glasgow

Maqbool Rasul, a Civil Engineering graduate (1976), is a successful entrepreneur with his own property investment company involved in buying and selling commercial properties in the UK for further development. Known for his Global Video store brand in the nineties, at the height of its success owner Maqbool was named as one of the UK’s top 100 entrepreneurs.

Eamon Hughes

Software Guru at Apple, Texas

Eamon graduated in 1985 with a BSc in Mathematical Sciences and is responsible for the architecture, design coding and testing of the BootROM Firmware on Altera's SoC devices. Eamon has worked as a software engineer across a number of the leading software companies around the world Intel, Sony and now Apple.

Dr Akmal Khushi

Director of Trespass, Glasgow

Dr Khushi, a former Chemistry student and recipient of an Honorary Doctorate from UWS in 2008, was awarded the Glasgow Lord Provost’s award for business in 2017. Dr Khushi is Director of Glasgow-based, outdoor clothing company Trespass, one of the UK’s most successful outdoor clothing retailers, with over 150 stores, a network of wholesale clients across the world.

William Smith

Vice-President Property & Market Development Asda, London

A BSc Land Economics graduate (1989), William is a qualified chartered surveyor with extensive experience working across various industries. Prior to Asda, William held the positions of Property Director and latterly Managing Director at Netto - part of the Danish Dansk/Maersk Group.

John Reid

Director at ReidStewart Associates

A UWS alumnus and seasoned managing director operating in Europe the USA and internationally. Currently on the board of three companies operating in intellectual property, engineering and new disruptive communication technology. A current member on council for the Law Society of Scotland and a past member of a former Prime Ministers working group in Eastern Europe alongside Lord Alan Sugar whilst chairman of a UK Trade Organisation. A recent publisher of Ideas to Reality(the journey from an idea to a business) and speaker on the role of the board in established and emerging companies.

Craig Burnside

Global IT Director Ernest Young, Edinburgh

Currently the Global IT Director with industry leaders Ernest Young, Craig drives forward EY’s IT Services Testing Capability and is the global process owner for IT Quality Assurance. A BSc Computing Science graduate from 1991, Craig previously held senior positions with the Carlsberg Group and Heineken.

Craig Hamilton Architects

Craig Hamilton has collaborated with the neo-classical sculptor Alexander Stoddart over many years on several projects where significant programmes of sculpture have been achieved. Award winning Craig Hamilton Architects has gained a reputation for progressive classical and traditional architecture.
